Caribou!

Partake in the hunt for one of Northern Canada’s most majestic big game animals - in the best place in North America to hunt them!

Our Caribou hunts are based out of world famous Treeline Lodge. Enjoy access to 7,000 square miles of pristine wilderness. Our area runs along the Manitoba/Nunavut border for 110 miles! No other outfitter in Northern Manitoba can easily access an area this large! Stay in a world class modern lodge. Travel by boat or fly into one of our several remote outpost cabins for a 2 day stay!

Hunt two herds! – The Qamanirjuaq is a heard of Barren Ground Caribou estimated at 496,000 animals. The Beverly Herd is also available to our hunters. This herd is estimated at 276,000. These herds of caribou are felt by many hunters to have superior genetics. This perception is due largely to the small amount of hunting pressure on the herds - preserving Trophy genetics of the large bulls for the lucky few!

Both herds migrate south through Nueltin from their calving grounds to the north. Their migratory route is fairly predictable. When they reach Nueltin Narrows the herds split - some head east towards our Blevins, John Osborne and South-East Nueltin. Some head down the west side towards our Tice Lake and Putahow Lake Cabins. Many seasons large portions of the main herd actually pass through the grounds at Treeline Lodge! Many of our hunters will take their animal within walking distance!

Black Bear!

The bear hunts are conducted out of Treeline Lodge on South Nueltin as well as Shannon Lake Lodge. Baits are placed 4-6 miles apart on Nueltin’s south basin as well as on Nahili lake and as far east as Shannon Lake – all bait sites are in close proximity to waters edge and easily accessible by boat or ATV. Top quality two person tree stands await the intrepid rifle, black powder and archery hunter lucky enough to secure a tag!

Black bear in this area over the past twenty years have averaged an estimated 300 – 350 lbs. In 2007 we took a total of 8 Bear – three of which will make Book. It is reasonable to assume that since there is such limited hunting pressure there will be many larger Bears available in season’s to come! Coloration varies from dark black to several light cinnamon and blonde. These animals have had little or no contact with people. These conditions will make for a very exciting hunt!

Moose!

Over the past twenty years we have been monitoring the moose population in the area keen to note the best calling areas. Moose spotted by our fisherman and staff, have been plentiful throughout the area. Several large bulls have been sited with 50-65” racks. These animals have had no hunting pressure and no contact with humans. The smallest Moose we have ever harvested measured 48 inches – the largest – 54 inches.

The moose hunts will be based out of Treeline Lodge, Tice Lake and Putahow Lake. Clients will travel by motorboat to calling areas which are easily accessible via canoe or Zodiak raft. Hunters need to be in good physical condition for this hunt and be prepared to spend a night or two camping out with your guide. Nueltin Lodges will outfit you with all the necessary equipment.

September Fishing!

Don’t forget the Lake Trout, Northern Pike and Arctic Grayling! September is an exceptional time to fish Lake Trout during their spawn. Expect big fish and lots of them available on the surface and feeding voraciously! The Northerns will be fattened up for the coming winter and ready to take any last morsels of easy prey they can get before the onset of cold weather. Grayling will be cruising the rapids in search of the last hatches of aquatic insects for the season. The fishing component of this package shouldn’t be regarded as merely an added bonus to the hunting. Fishing Nueltin in September is an anglers dream! When preparing to head north for your adventure make sure you are ready to tangle with lakes full of huge aggressive fish!

HUNTING NUELTIN- A CULTURAL EXPERIENCE - SUB-ARCTIC ADVENTURE IN A LAND WHERE TIME STANDS STILL!

A sip of hot coffee spreads warmth to your core as you swing open the screen door and step quietly into the cool morning air. The hushed and darkened expanse envelopes you as you walk toward the lodge, pausing briefly on the deck to take in the scenery that surrounds you. Opening the door, the sights, sounds and smells stir memories of a childhood that doesn’t seem so distant right now. You feel a calm certainty that this trip is time well spent…

The powerful opus of the outboard motor shudders to sudden silence as your guide hits the kill switch. You hear the water lap the shore and gently slap the side of the aluminum boat. The gritty shoreline meets keel and forward progress is halted. Your guide smiles and whispers hushed last minute instructions. You exit onto the beach, feel the sand beneath your boots and prepare to climb the rise immediately ahead of you. Checking your rifle, you shoulder it and anticipation begins to awaken within you.

Laboring quietly as you climb the rise of the sand esker, you watch your breath. It floats ahead and then behind you – a piece of your spirit escaped but hesitant to leave your body. Your gaze moves across the landscape and you regain that sense you don’t normally notice until you are on the hunt. The game paths you follow on the sparsely treed taiga were beaten by the foot of your prey – and the ancient hunters that came before you. You are the only one there, but you don’t feel alone.

Again checking your safety, your mind wanders into a distant past. What it must have been like for the people who once paddled these waters and walked this land. They followed the same herd on some of the same paths. This adventure is a way for you to come to know this wild place and become a part of it – they were a part of this land but their adventure was one of greater urgency. They felt the winter coming. As the nights grew longer and colder, they knew that they must be successful in their hunt. With taut and powerful handmade weapons, these People of the Deer sought the prey that would sustain them in this beautiful, though harsh, land. The meat was their sustenance. Hide and bone was their transportation, clothing and shelter. They watched the same grey ghost of their breath hanging behind them on the trail. Just as you pause to think of them, they paused to remember the hunters who came before them.

Many of the People of the Deer are gone now –or at least not living upon the land as they once did. As you gaze across this ancient pristine wilderness, you feel a presence. The spirit of an ancient unnamed hunter shares your path.

A light breeze crests the esker and cools you around the collar as movement on the horizon captures your attention and brings you instantly into the here and now. You again feel a calm certainty that this trip is time well spent…
